Project Experience: Harvard New Science Building Air Quality Regulatory Assistance, Boston, Massachusetts

The Challenge

HMMH is providing air quality regulatory assistance to Harvard University and Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM) for the proposed District Energy Facility (DEF) at the Science building.

The Strategy

The DEF is initially comprised of one 4.7 MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant to provide steam and electricity to the New Science Building.  In addition a 3,500 kW emergency generator is also being installed in the event power is interrupted at the building.  HMMH is developing the air quality permitting plan to account for the additional hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), VOCs, NOx, SO2, and particulate matter which will be emitted from the combustion and laboratory sources.  Harvard is an existing Title V facility for NOx, therefore, additional VOC and NOx emissions must be compared to New Source Review Thresholds.

The Solution

HMMH is working with Harvard to address the impacts from the New Science Building as well as prepare for the implications of future development as they could trigger other thresholds for HAPs and MACT standards.
