The Challenge
The Virginia Department of Transportation needed to provide traffic noise mitigation for a complex multi-level interchange in Springfield, VA surrounded by residential neighborhoods and recreation areas
The Strategy
HMMH designed a system of noise barriers that reduces traffic noise levels at over 1,000 homes and three parks.. Because of the project's complexity, we subdivided the interchange into smaller pieces and evaluated noise abatement options, including noise barriers on flyover ramps, using components of the Traffic Noise Model (TNM).

The photograph at left depicts the existing sound wall, while the photograph at right depicts a rendering of one of the proposed noise barrier systems for the Springfield Estates and Monticello Woods neighborhoods
