Project Experience: NAS Whidbey Island, Washington

The Challenge

This Naval Air Station consists of Ault Field, the air station, and Outlying Field Coupeville. Citizens in the surrounding area were concerned about aircraft noise and low levels of non-aircraft sounds.

The Strategy

HMMH prepared the noise portion for an EIS that examined different distributions of training operations between the two facilities and developed contours to DNL 55 dB. We ensured accuracy through the use of radar data, in-depth interviews with pilots, and two weeks of on-site noise monitoring. We also provided text that included:

  • Detailed information on the effects of noise on people
  • Comparisons of measured and computed levels
  • Analysis and comparison of four alternatives, single event contours, and complete documentation of modeled operations
