Project Experience: Railroad Wayside Horn Comparison, Alaska

The Challenge

A study was needed to measure noise levels generated by a wayside horn installation as compared with the noise levels generated by locomotive horns for Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC).

The Strategy

HMMH conducted a series of noise measurements on both the wayside horn and locomotive horns at the crossing to examine the differences between the two types of horns.

The Solution

The results indicate that the wayside horn is substantially quieter than the locomotive horn, especially at distances further from the grade crossing. By using a wayside horn at a crossing, there would be a substantial decrease in the noise level at residences near the grade crossing.
