Project Experience: Southern California Association of Governments Regional Airspace Study

Completed prior to staff joining HMMH

The Challenge

Determining the impact of increased demand, which was forecasted for LAX and 15 other airports in the region. A central issue in the study involved exploring opportunities to reallocate projected demand across the sixteen airports – an issue that involved interaction between the forecasts and the simulation performed for this study.

The Strategy

HMMH staff led an airspace and aviation system analysis of the Los Angeles Basin. The team:

  • Generated regional airspace designs that optimized airspace capacity in 2010, 2020, and 2030
  • Provided a set of models representing current and future region-wide airspace operations
  • Developed a report describing the ability of the regional multi-airport system to support the forecasted demand through investments and demand reallocation
